Sunsense Spotlight: Tyler Sweeney, Energy Expert

January 22, 2020

Last year,  Sunsense was lucky enough to have Tyler Sweeney join the team as a Residential Solar Consultant. Tyler brought with him a passion for sustainability and extensive knowledge of energy efficiency. He has quickly made himself indispensable! Tyler not only helps clients decide what solar PV system is best for their home, but also conducts home energy assessments to help homeowners save as much energy as possible.

Outside of work, Tyler enjoys going on adventures in his home town of Crested Butte. He also makes the rest of us very jealous by traveling to wonderful and interesting places around the world. We are always wondering where will he go to next!

Here are Tyler’s thoughts about the Solar Industry:

Why do you choose to work in the solar industry?

There are many reasons I choose to work in the solar industry but the biggest reasons are: the great people I get to work with in the industry, the difference renewable energy makes in the world, and the incredible technology that never ceases to amaze me.

How did you get into solar?

For a long time I had the notion in my head that solar was an industry that I was interested in working in.  It became a reality after I was laid off from a GIS mapping job and was offered free training opportunities in emerging fields.  Solar was one of those fields and the rest is history.

What has been the most satisfying aspect of your job?

Besides the unlimited free coffee available at the office, I really enjoy working with people who are passionate about renewable energy and how it relates to conservation and reducing one’s impact on this planet.  Whenever a homeowner or small business owner exhibits that passion and takes one big step in fulfilling their goal of living more sustainably, it makes me appreciate even more what it is I’m doing for work.  The coffee is the best part though.

What has been challenging?

The most challenging aspect of working in solar is all of the policy changes.  These seemingly continual changes require us to keep updated on what is happening in the industry both locally, statewide, and nationally.  It’s an evolving landscape to say the least.

How do you see the future of the solar industry?

I see amazing things happening in the next several decades.  Solar is on a sweeping growth trajectory right now, particularly in light of the recent ITC extension.  I expect that growth to continue well into the future.  I see energy storage as the next great leap forward in renewable energy, particularly solar.  I think energy storage may become the big game changer.

If you weren’t working in the solar industry, what would you be doing?

I have always had a strong interest and keen eye for photography so perhaps a life as a starving artist would be a strong possibility.  I love being outside, traveling, and coming across new and interesting people and places on this planet – and trying to creatively document it.
