Sunsense Spotlight: “Jes” of All Trades

January 22, 2020

Now that the holidays are over and we have brought in the New Year, it’s time for the first Sunsense Spotlight blog of 2016!!

This time we will focus on Sunsense cornerstone, Jes Sanderford. Jes joined the Sunsense Team back in 2008 to work in the Operations Department. With his extensive rock climbing background, Jes felt right at home installing solar on steep roofs. He has proven to be an indispensable asset to the Sunsense Team. As most people who work with Jes know, he is definitely a Jack (or Jes) of all trades. If this guy can visualize it, he can make it happen—which has come in handy more times than you can imagine. This ingenuity and resourcefulness made Jes the perfect fit to manage our Service Department—where you have to be ready for anything and everything.

Outside of work, Jes takes advantage of all that Colorado has to offer—whether it’s rock climbing, skiing, hiking, or camping. He loves to explore the Roaring Fork Valley with his partner Kim and their mini superhero, Micah.

Here is Jes’ perspective on the Solar Industry:

Why do you choose to work in the solar industry?
Energy production is not only necessary but really cool, and solar is attractive because of how clean it is. Besides, mining seems too scary.

How did you get into solar?
I was raised by solar-using, environmentally conscious parents, who encouraged my interests in sustainability. They helped me get to Solar Energy International (SEI), and SEI helped me get to Sunsense.

What has been the most satisfying aspect of your job?
Sunsense has grown a lot and has the ability to take on large and exciting projects, but there is nothing more rewarding than the excitement of a homeowner that is turning on their roof top solar array for the first time.

What has been challenging?
Its all challenging and its ever changing. The solar industry seems very dynamic and it is hard to stay on top of it all.

How do you see the future of the solar industry?
I think solar will continue to grow and evolve, it will become a larger player in energy production the world over. As battery and electrical storage options improve, solar will be a more reliable energy source–able to provide power 24/7.

If you weren’t working in the solar industry, what would you be doing?
I have no idea.
