Participating in your local community around environmental issues can be empowering. For this blog, we look at different ways you can spring into action and get involved in the Roaring Fork Valley to help combat climate change.

Act

We have all heard the phrase “Think Globally, Act Locally” and there is nothing more local than your own home! There are easy changes you can make to lessen the carbon footprint of your home; changing light bulbs, updating insulation, and switching out your old windows are all good places to start. Beyond efficiency measures, offsetting your energy usage with a solar PV system is a great way to live a greener lifestyle. If you want to go a step further, you can always look into getting a battery backup system for your home, so even when the power from the utility grid goes out, you are still running off of clean energy.

Engage

We are lucky enough to live in a valley that has extensive green events, programs, and resources. There are some wonderful environmentally focused events, such as the Green is the New Black fashion show and Dandelion Day in Carbondale, which offer opportunities to gather with others and get inspired by how people are making a difference and fighting climate change. You can even volunteer to become a part of the Green Team to help make Mountain Fair a zero waste event this summer! There are many other groups that are focused on local food production as a way to cut down on transportation emissions. If you don’t have a yard but want to grow your own organic produce during the summer, you can join a community garden where you pay a low fee to be able to cultivate your own harvest.

Lead

We need leadership that not only acknowledges climate change exists, but will also take action and prioritize green policies. It could be as simple as spearheading a recycling or composting initiative at work or organizing an action team to make your child’s school an Eco-School. For example, last year a passionate group of Roaring Fork High School students, teachers, and community members joined forces to install a solar PV system large enough to offset the school’s energy usage! You have the power to build a local coalition to work on enacting greener policies. Anyone can be a leader; all it requires is making the effort to get out and get involved in your community.
