As Fall approaches and the kids get used to being back in school, there are more opportunities than ever to learn about renewable energy in a classroom setting. Students in Carbondale, as well as across the country, now have access to an incredible program called Solar Rollers.

Solar Rollers is an exciting new energy-based competition for high school students. Each school’s team designs and hand-builds a solar-powered remote control race car over the course of the school year. In the springtime, the teams come together for a solar-powered race. The cars can hit speeds of up to 28 miles per hour and students are deeply drawn into hands-on work with this type of energy system. What a great way to catch the interest of high school students who have a need for speed while at the same time educating them about math, science, and engineering!

Along the way, students learn how to generate electricity from the sun, how electricity is stored in a battery, and how to maximize energy transfer from the sun into moving a four wheel 1/10 scale race. These students represent the next generation of energy consumers and it is reassuring to know that they are being exposed to alternatives to fossil fuels in this fun and educational way.
